I think any gamer from the past 20 years could tell you that.

The greater level of “adrenergic stimulation seen with gaming” could explain the difference, they say.

The effects?

An active video game intervention has a small but definite effect on BMI and body composition in overweight and obese children.
I can’t wait until I can hook up a treadmill to campaign though a Zelda game.

Video Game Theatre: “an interactive theatre experience played as a tribute to the games we all grew up with.”

Created by Aaron Willoughby, a grad student at Virginia Commonwealth, “who wished to mix the power of theatre and the interest of video games.”

Looks pretty cool. You can also read Aaron’s thesis on this project for a more detailed look at his fusion of games and the stage.

I can tell Video Game Theatre has promise because “theatre” is spelled with the “r” before “e,” as it should be.

Games are addictive? I had no idea!

Study finds “that games can help reinforce a social activist message, especially if their audiences consider them realistic.” In this study, that’s empathy towards homeless people.

Skitchin’ - Level 1 Music Covered on guitar/drums/bass

— I forgot how impressive this game’s music was. I think a track or two may have ripped off Pantera, but I can’t tell. Anyone know?

My PAX East 2011 Schedule

I’m traveling to Boston with three suitably nerdy friends to this year’s PAX East. They’re cool cats, but I’m down with talking up anyone, so I whipped up a schedule of panels I’d like to attend in PDF form. If you want to meet up at one or all of my favored panels (or whenever) give me a tweet @TheMarkInman and let me know!

Maximising Income in StarCraft II

— I never thought I’d see the day gaming tips ended up in scientific journals. Click the image to read the paper and look at the bottom of this post for select studies from the same journal.

This paper looks at the income mechanic of the video game Starcraft II. We look at the optimum number of workers to have mining at one mineral patch at any one time. This optimum number depends on the type of minerals being mined, but is ~2.4 for blue mineral patches, and 2.5 for gold mineral patches.

By S. Clapton, D. Boulderstone and C. Meredith in the Journal of Physics Special Topics from the Department of Astronomy and Physics at the University of Leicester.

This particular volume has many other amazing studies such as the Monty Python-inspired “Determining the Smallest Migratory Bird Native to Britain able to carry a Coconut” and heat-ray bursts in “The Last Son Of Krypton,” though I find the practical exploration of “Nuking Meteors” the most enlightening.
